This irrigation system was built under the leadership of Li Bing and his son. Li served as the governor of Shu Prefecture administrated by Qin State during the Warring States Period (476 BC - 221 BC).

At the beginning, the project was named Jian Peng. Jian refers to the Jian Mountain that stands next to the project. Today, it is called Yulei Mountain. Diqiang people living near the project called it Peng. Hence, its name.

During the governance of the Shu State of the Three Kingdoms Period (220 - 280 AD), Du’an County was established here. Therefore, the project was called Du’an Yan. Until the Song Dynasty (960 - 1279 AD), it was firstly called Dujiangyan. Yan actually means “weir” in English.
