It was built to commemorate Zhuge Liang, the prime minister of the Shu Kingdom during the Three Kingdoms Period. He assisted Liu Bei to found the Shu Kingdom. After Liu Bei’s death, he launched five north expeditions in hope of destroying the Wei Kingdom. Unfortunately, he didn’t succeed but died in August of 234 AD.

In 223 AD., Liu Bei died at the White Emperor City and was buried at Hui Mausoleum in Chengdu. Later, Wu Hou Shrine was built beside Liu Bei’s Tomb.
