Ge Garden is an outstanding example of the private gardens of Southern China. During the reign of Qing dynasty Emperor Jiaqing, Huang Zhiyun, a well-known salt merchant, expanded the Shouzhi Garden built during the Ming Dynasty into a large private garden. He was very fond of bamboo, so bamboo was widely planted in the garden. Bamboo leaves resemble the Chinese character ‘Ge (个)’. Hence, the garden was given the name Ge Garden. The rockery is the highlight of the garden. The spring rockery, the summer rockery, the autumn rockery and the winter rockery together form the ‘four-season-rockery’ landscape. Visiting Ge Garden, visitors will feel as if they have experienced the four seasons of the year.
