In 1718, Zhunge’er Tribe harassed Tibet. The emperor Kangxi sent about three thousand soldiers to pacify the riot. Afterwards, around 1000 soldiers were left in Chengdu. Meanwhile, a Manchu City, also called Small City (Shao Cheng), was built to the west of Chengdu City in order to accommodate the soldiers.

The Wide and Narrow Lanes are the only two remaining alleys of the Small City. From 2003 to 2008, these two lanes have been restored and turned into a new popular tourist attraction in Chengdu.
