Beijing Bell and Drum Towers lie to the north of Dianmenwai Avenue. The Bell Tower has a 7.02 meters (23 feet) high bell, which is the largest and heaviest bell in China. The Drum Tower has one large drum and twenty-four small drums in all. The large drum represents a year while 24 small ones are the symbols of the 24 Solar Terms. The bell and drum towers were built in ancient times for telling the time. The bell and drums in Beijing Bell and Drum Towers had the same function helping the local population keep track of the time so that they could live and work regularly. One can also hire a rickshaw to explore the Hutong near the Bell and Drum Towers.
