The Torch Festival is a very important festival celebrated in southwestern China by the ethnic minorities like Yi, Bai, Hani, Lisu and Naxi. The festival usually falls in early June according to the Chinese lunar calendar (or July on the Gregorian calendar). During the festival, torches will be lighted when night falls to repel insects and expel evils. Young men and women will sing and dance around them.
