The peacock is the ‘Holy Bird’ to Dai ethnic groups. About 1000 years ago, people of the Dai Minorities already performed the peacock dance at festivals and religious rituals. According to the folk custom, the peacock dance was performed by male performers. They had to shoulder heavy stage props, such as peacock’s wings and feathers.

Later, the peacock dance evolved, heavy peacock’s wings, feathers and other props used. Female performers wear skirts decorated with peacock feathers or patterns to perform ‘update peacock dance’.

The peacock dance on the ship is performed by three dancers representing fairies in white skirts decorated with patterns of peacock feathers.
