Constructed in 1417, the Gate of Heavenly Peace (Tiananmen Gate) was originally a three-story timberwork gateway called Chengtianmen (Gate of Accepting Heavenly Mandate). It was burned down in a big fire in 1451 and rebuilt in 1465. Unfortunately, it was ruined at the end of the Ming Dynasty due to the peasant uprising led by Li Zicheng. In 1651, Chengtianmen was rebuilt again and renamed as the Gate of Heavenly Peace. Since November 1987, Tiananmen Gate has been open to the public. Tourists can walk on top of the gate to view Tiananmen Square.
