'The Peacocks Fly to Southeast' is a well-known lyric poem from ancient China's Southern Song Dynasty (420-589). It is a tragic love story of a young man named Jiao Zhongqing and his wife Liu Lanzhi. Though they love each other very much, Jiao’s mother can’t stand Jiao’s wife and finally Liu Lanzi leaves her husband and comes to her mother’s home. Lanzhi’s mother and brother forces her to marry someone else but she refuses and eventually drowns herself in a river. Jiao learns about his wife’s death and hangs himself on a tree. Finally, they are together again.
Forget to say, it is performed by Lusheng, a reed-pipe wind instrument. Can you feel Jiao and Liu’s sadness when hearing this?
