This place had another name in ancient times, Feng Zhou. Today it is famed as the hometown to Phoenix and Qiang people. Legend has it that once a phoenix achieved nirvana in this county; hence the name “Hometown to Phoenix”.
Qiang people originally lived in Gansu and Qinghai. During the Xia, Shang and Zhou dynasties (21st century BC – 256BC), they moved to Shaanxi, Henan and Shanxi. Until the Spring and Autumn Period (770 - 476 BC), Feng County became Qiang people’s habitation. Jiang Wei, a famous military general of Shu State during the Three Kingdoms Period (220 – 280 AD), attacked Yongzhou in 249 but eventually failed. As a result, Wei State sent their soldiers to kill Qiang people who supported Jiang Wei. Then they started to migrate from Feng County to Si chuan and the southern parts of Shaanxi and Gansu. Those who didn’t leave integrated into local Han community.
In recent years, local government has established Qiang Village, Culture Museum and Performance Center of Qiang Minority to preserve and demonstrate local Qiang people’s history and culture.
