Long long ago, Yan Di (Yan Emperor) came to the dense forest in the northwest part of Hubei Province to gather herbs. After gathering plenty of herbs, he descended the mountains and found a river appeared in the way. Yan Di planned to reach Yangtze River. However, he was stranded here since he couldn’t swim. Suddenly, a raft drifted down from the upper reach of the river. Yan Di jumped on the raft and reached Yangtze River eventually. Therefore, the river was named Shennong River.
