White Emperor City is located on the northern bank of the Yangtze River in Fengjie City. It is said that a general called Gongsun Shu set up a regime in Sichuan. One day, he came here and saw white fog rising from a well in the city, which looked like a white dragon. Thus, he named himself White Emperor and the city, White Emperor City. In 36 AD, Gongsun Shu was defeated by Liu Xiu, the founder of the Eastern Han Dynasty. The locals built the White Emperor Temple in the city to commemorate Gongsun Shu

In the Three Kingdoms Period, Liu Bei, the king of the Shu, was defeated by the Wu kingdom and fell back to the White Emperor City. He was seriously ill, so entrusted his son to his prime minister, Zhuge Liang.

In the Ming Dynasty, the statue of Gongsun Shu in the White Emperor Temple was replaced by the statues of Liu Bei and his two sworn brothers Guan Yu and Zhang Fei. Since then, this temple has become a place to commemorate Liu Bei, Guan Yu and Zhang Fei. However, the temple’s name has remained the same.
