The Hall of Joyful Longevity (Leshoutang) was first built during the reign of Emperor Qianlong. Originally, it was a gift for his mother’s sixtieth birthday. In 1860, it was burnt down by the allied forces of Britain and France. Later, it was rebuilt and became the Empress Dowager Cixi’s residence.
