Yonghe Temple (Harmony and Peace Palace Lamasery) was once the residence of Emperor Yongzheng before he took the throne from his father Emperor Kangxi. In 1744, Emperor Qianlong, son of Emperor Yongzheng, changed the dwelling into a lamasery (a monastery for lamas). Yonghe Temple is the largest and best preserved lamasery in Beijing.
