Located in the southeast of Tianshui City in Gansu Province, Maiji Caves, together with Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang, Longmen Grottoes in Luoyang and Yungang Grottoes in Datong, are the most renowned grottoes in China.
There are 194 niches with more than 7,200 stone and clay sculptures. Also, there are around 1,300 square meters (about 1, 555 square yards) of murals in the caves. Cave carvings began in the Late Qin Dynasty (221 BC – 206 BC) and further worked on in the Northern Wei, Western Wei, Northern Zhou, Sui, Tang, Five Dynasties, Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties.
On the cliff of the Maiji Mountain, these caves are only reachable by plank roads.
