Originally built in the year of 326 AD, this temple has a history of nearly 1700 years. It gains its name because of an Indian monk called Hui Li. He came to Hangzhou in 326 AD and found a peak called Peak Flown From Afar. According to him, it was the dwelling of the Immortals. Then he decided to build a temple near the peak and gave the name Lingyin Temple.

Peak Flown From Afar is famous for the Buddhist Grottoes. A long time ago, there were 72 caves on the peak, which housed a great number of Buddhist statues. Today, just several caves and around 470 Buddhist statues remain on the east side of the peak.
