With a history of around 2700 years, Pingyao was first built during the reign of King Xuan of the Western Zhou Dynasty (1045 – 771 BC). It was expanded during the reign of Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang of the Ming Dynasty (1368 – 1644 AD) and developed into the national financial center in the late Qing Dynasty (1644 – 1911 AD). China’s earliest money exchange shop Ri Sheng Chang came into being here.
