The rickshaws were first introduced and used in Shanghai, China at the late 19th century. Since then, they have become a popular form of transport and are used widely in many cities. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the rickshaws were eliminated.

Today, the rickshaws have revived in some tourist areas, especially in Beijing’s old hutongs (narrow alleyways) and courtyards. There are many famous hutongs near the Back Sea. Some well-known buildings like Prince Gong’s Mansion, the Former Residence of Song Qingling and the Former Residence of Guo Moruo are hidden in the hutongs. Tourists can hire rickshaws to explore these buildings and experience a wonderful hutong tour.
