Legend has it that an army detachment from Genghis Khan's hordes reached Ili in mid summer of 1219. Hungry and exhausted, the fighters climbed the mountains and found there was a stretch of grassland decorated with fully-blossomed flowers and crystal streams. On seeing the boundless grassland, the soldiers were overjoyed and shouted “Nalati, Nalati”. Hence, its name.
