Jiuhua Mountain is regarded as one of the four most Buddhist shrines in China together with Wutai Mountain, Putuo Mountain and Emei Mountain. In 719, a Korean monk called Jin Qiaojue arrived and practiced Buddhism on Jiu Hua Mountain. In 794, Jin Qiaojue attained Nirvana. His disciples believed that he was the Earth Treasure Bodhisattva. Thus, they built a pagoda and worshipped him.
As a result, Jiuhua Mountain has become the Earth Treasure Bodhisattva’s shrine. An annual grand summons ceremony is held on July 30 according to Chinese lunar calendar. Thousands of Buddhist disciples burn incense, visit "Corporeal Body and Treasure Hall” to worship Jin Qiaojue, the Earth Treasure Bodhisattva.
