The Jade Buddha Temple is renowned for its two jade Buddha statues. One is the Sitting Buddha and the other is the Reclining Buddha. In 1882, a monk called Huigen brought five Buddha statues from Burma to Mt. Putuo. When he passed by Shanghai, he left two Buddha statues (the Sitting Buddha and the Reclining Buddha). Thus, a temple was built to keep these two jade Buddha statues.
Unfortunately, the temple was ruined in the 1911 Revolution. Luckily, the two jade Buddha statues were safe. Later, a new temple was built on the present site in 1928. It was called the Jade Buddha Temple.
