This painting was drawn by Zhang Zeduan, a famous painter of Northern Song Dynasty (960 - 1127 AD).It displays a scene of prosperity of Bianjing (capital of Northern Song Dynasty) during the Qingming Festival. Hence, its name.
In this 25.2 cm wide and 528 cm long picture, Zhang drew 814 people, 73 domestic animals, more than 20 carriages and 29 boats. Besides, houses, bridges and towers in the picture also show their own distinctive features. How excellent his drawing skills are!
The original painting lies in the Palace Museum of Beijing. In 2010, an electronic version of this famous painting was shown in China Pavilion during the Shanghai World Expo. With a length of around 130 meters (427 feet) and a height of 6.3 meters (21 feet), the electronic painting is 30 times as big as the original one.
China Pavilion was made over into a museum and open to the public on October 1, 2012. Its official name is China Art Museum.
