Built in 1755 during the reign of Emperor Qianlong, the Puning Temple is located near the Chengde Mountain Resort. Modeled after the Samye Monastery in Tibet it embodies both Chinese and Tibetan architectural styles. The Puning Temple has the sculpture of the Goddess of Mercy. This is the world’s tallest wooden sculpture; it is 22.28 meters (about 73 feet) high and weighs 110 tons (242,508 pounds). Hence, the nickname the Big Buddha Temple.
