Located to the south of the Monument to the People's Heroes on Tiananmen Square, Memorial Hall of Chairman Mao is the resting place of Mao Zedong, the founding father of the People’s Republic of China. It was built in November, 1976 and opened to the public on Sep. 9, 1977.
There are two floors in the hall. On the first floor are North Great Hall, Memorial Hall and South Great Hall. One can pay tribute to Chairman Mao in the Memorial Hall. The body of Mao Zedong is covered with the party flag of the Communist Party of China and rests in a crystal coffin. The second floor mainly displays the revolutionary achievements of Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai, Liu Shaoqi, Zhu De, Deng Xiaoping and Chen Yun.
