Located at the Southern part of the Sichuan province in China, 2 hours from Chengdu and near the city of Leshan is the Leshan Giant Buddha. Many of the Buddha have seen degradation from weathering, air pollution, and swarms of tourists. The Leshan Giant Buddha is "Mi Luo" Maitreya buddha. It is said that the monk Budai, which looks like this statue is an incarnation of Maitreya.

Construction on the Giant Buddha began in 713 AD. A Chinese monk named Haitong, hope that Buddha would calm the turbulent waters that plagued the shipping vessels down the river.
